Thirty Years

Thirty years ago, Laurie and I were not trying to start a company.

We were trying to solve a problem. Our two oldest boys were in a school that wasn’t working, and I put the question to R.C. Sproul—what does a Christian actually do about his children’s education? His answer was a reading assignment: Recovering the Lost Tools of Learning. We read it. Within a few days we were planning a school. Not for a movement, not for a market. For our own four boys.

Veritas was never meant to be a career. It was a side project, something Laurie and I could do together out of the house. So when her parents offered to advance the money for our first catalog, I told her no. “You can’t make money selling books.” I may have put it more strongly than that. Then the garage became the warehouse, the kitchen phone became customer service, and whatever it was I thought I’d turned down, this was not it.

That was the spring of 1998. Veritas was started in September of 1996 with the expectations of being a hobby business offering just our history and Bible cards. This fall makes thirty years and it’s not what we thought.

What I didn’t understand at the time was how many other parents were having the same argument at their own kitchen tables. That’s who found us. Not customers, exactly, but families who had already decided their children deserved better than what was on offer, and who were paying for that decision in money, in hours, in the quiet certainty that some relative thought they were making a mistake. We simply had something to hand them. They did the hard part.

Almost nothing about the thirty years since went according to our plan, and nearly all of it went better than our plan. We didn’t set out to build a school. We certainly didn’t set out to teach children in 70 countries. We started with history and Bible cards for grammar-stage students, and the Lord kept handing us more to do.

I’d like to take the credit. I can’t. The list of people with a real hand in this runs well past a thousand—teachers, staff, authors, pastors, and a great many parents who simply told a friend. Thirty years on, that last part still amazes me. For years, our job was mostly persuasion. We would stand in front of a room and ask parents to picture something none of us had seen yet. That part of the job is finished. We can point now. Your graduates are the argument.

Which is why I’m more eager about the next thirty years than the last thirty. The team God has assembled here is stronger than the one that started this, and I mean that plainly. What began at our kitchen table now belongs to a great many people who love it as much as we do . . . and there are children not yet born who will grow up on this curriculum.

Thirty years in, the mission hasn’t moved an inch: restoring culture for Christ, one young heart and mind at a time.
