How to Make Chinese Lanterns for the Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year, also called Lunar New Year, begins on Saturday, February 10, 2024. The celebration lasts for fifteen days. The Chinese calendar follows the moon instead of the sun (which our Gregorian calendar follows).
The legend surrounding the Chinese New Year is that of a monster named Nian. Thousands of years ago, Nian would sneak into villages on the first night of the new year to kill the villagers—as the story goes, he was afraid of loud noises, bright lights, and the color red, so these lanterns were used to chase the beast away.
