Create the Olympics at Home!

Create the Olympics at Home!

I always like using current events in the classroom, and with the Olympics this month, I found so much opportunity with it. I decided to have our own backyard Olympic games in which each child got to create his or her own country to compete. (Download the free printable in the Free Offer section of this Epistula to create your own!) If you want to use it as an excuse to learn geography, instead each child can research and represent their own real country. Below is a list of “Olympic Games” you can play in your backyard or a park, with minimal planning effort.

  1. Gymnastics - No need for fancy equipment. Each child can create their own floor routine for this one. Have fun choosing songs and creating choreo!
  2. Discus - Use a frisbee as your discus and see who can throw it the farthest. For details on track and field events click HERE.
  3. 100-meter race - This race is about the length of an American football field. For little ones, you might want to make it a 100-foot race instead.
  4. Hurdles - All you need for this one is some sharp pencils and some pool noodles. (Oh and some agile kids to compete). Check out these DIY backyard hurdles
  5. Basketball - Don’t have an actual basketball net? No problem, just use a laundry basket and try shooting water balloons into it. Whoever gets the most points wins!

Don’t forget to end your backyard games with a prize. Whether it’s a gold medal or a frozen treat, your little athletes deserve it!
