Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about Self-Paced History, Bible and Omnibus courses.
Self-Paced History and Bible
How many lessons are there and what is the length of time per lesson?
There are 32 events studied in each course. Each event has five lessons in the history courses and four in the Bible courses, of approximately 30 to 45 minutes each. It is intended that a student will complete one event per week over a school year of 32 weeks.
How do Self-Paced Courses work? What does a typical day look like?
When using a Self-Paced course, a typical day includes logging in, launching the lesson and completing the lesson. There is no homework for the history or Bible courses. Optional history and Bible teacher’s manuals, history project workbooks, flashcards, and a collection of historical books are available for the Grammar courses.
For how long can my child access the course?
One year of access to the Self-Paced course starts when the student enters the course for the first time. If needed, extensions can be purchased.
When does my 12-month access begin?
See the Self-Paced course access terms in our Terms and Conditions.
Are the courses suitable for children with learning disabilities?
Children with varying disabilities have had great success with these courses. Feel free to call us at 800-922-5082 or fill out our Free Consultation Form to discuss your personal situation.
Why do the self-paced history courses have characters that “bicker” and sometimes act in an unexemplary way?
It’s important to realize that there is a purpose in highlighting various character traits (even those which aren’t always the sort one would want a child to emulate) and, rather than just intending to make the characters more interesting, it serves to note the wide range of people and attitudes we come in contact with in the world. The Bible is replete with characters of all sorts who are intended to be a positive or negative example for us. Not every character we read about in the Bible is meant to be followed perfectly. (Recall the stories of some of the greatest heroes in Scripture, like David, Moses, and Samson.) Real-life portrayals of human nature point us to the One who is the perfect example and our perfect sacrifice for sin!
We hope our characters portray a picture of the world that is truthful to the various character traits that exist. Where characters fall short in attitudes or behavior, we write the courses to show them grow in grace as the course and lessons progress, repairing relationships where broken, pointing characters and students alike back to the perfect Word. Like you and I, the characters are not perfect people, and therefore, we believe, they are more relatable. So through presenting aspects of humanity and life as they really are, we hope students learn more about God’s world at the same time they are learning more about God’s Word.
For what age are the courses intended?
The courses are designed for students in 2nd–6th grades, just like the Veritas Press history and Bible programs. We’ve seen 7th and 8th graders benefit too—especially if they have not had our history or Bible program earlier. However, some students, younger and many older (including parents), have been enjoying the courses.
Will my child be graded on his work?
Yes. Tests and worksheets are graded, providing parents, teachers, and students with progress reports. We are also accredited by the Middle States Association. Read more about our accreditation.
Can my child be enrolled in more than one course simultaneously?
Yes, there is no limit. In fact, we highly recommend taking one history course and one Bible course each year.
Are the courses qualified for the Veritas Press Yearly Certification program?
Yes. Successful completion of a course will qualify for the history or Bible requirement for yearly certification.
Why are the historical fiction titles and resources optional?
The historical fiction is optional because we recognize that some may not wish to include it in their history study. It should be noted that it adds a great deal for those who do choose to include it. Other resources are not required, because the course is carefully designed to be self-contained, eliminating the need for most outside resources. However, if you love books as we do, you may want to get several anyway—they will only help reinforce the learning.
You can access our free PDFs of suggested books for each course.
What devices can be used to do the course?
See our technology handbook for supported devices.
Are the courses available on DVDs?
No. They are accessed online only. Due to the interactive nature of the courses and the large file sizes, the courses must be accessed online.
Can I use the courses for multiple children?
Each student needs their own course in order to complete the graded assignments and to keep track of their progress. Courses cannot be shared between multiple children. Once a test has been taken, both the correct and incorrect answers are recorded and shown on the test slides.
How do these courses compare to a parent teaching the course or taking the course online with a live teacher?
We believe that the self-paced courses provide the best way to learn the material. Additionally, it is difficult for a parent to teach every child in every subject in a homeschool. Finally, the student can do the work whenever he wishes.
Are report cards available?
Parents can see and print the grades and progress of their students at any time.
What are the system requirements?

Self-Paced Omnibus

Omnibus Primary courses have 175 lessons. The courses are planned for a five-day-per-week schedule and can be completed in 35 weeks. Omnibus Secondary courses have 105 lessons. They are intended for a three-day-per-week schedule and can be completed in 35 weeks. Lessons take 45–60 minutes.
How do Self-Paced Courses work? What does a typical day look like?
When using a Self-Paced course, a typical day includes logging in, launching the lesson and completing the lesson. At the end of the lesson, the reading assignment homework will be displayed on the second-to-last screen. All assigned homework will be assumed to be complete before starting the next lesson. Completion of reading assignments is necessary to succeed in the course.
For how long can my child access the course?
See the Self-Paced course access terms in our Terms and Conditions.
Can my child be enrolled in more than one course simultaneously?
Yes, there is no limit. In fact, we highly recommend Omnibus Primary and Secondary together.
How is homework handled with a Self-Paced Course?
The homework includes the books from the first and second semester book lists. The homework for Omnibus is not optional, and the lessons presume knowledge of the books that were assigned to be read.
What happens if I need more than one calendar year to complete the course?
See the Self-Paced course access and extension terms in our Terms and Conditions.
For what ages are the courses intended?
While the courses are intended for 7th–12th grades, we understand that parents may need to assess the books being covered in each particular course to determine their student’s readiness for some of the content contained therein.
Are adults permitted to take a course?
Absolutely, and they will be amazed at what they learn.
Are the courses suitable for children with learning disabilities?
We have great success working with a wide range of issues. Children who have difficulty reading due to visual processing can listen to the books on tape. Other learning disabilities should be discussed with our office. Feel free to call us at 800-922-5082 or fill out our Free Consultation Form.
Will my child be graded on his work?

Can I use the courses for multiple children?
Each student needs their own course in order to complete the graded assignments and to keep track of their progress. Courses cannot be shared between multiple children. Once a test has been taken, both the correct and incorrect answers are recorded and shown on the test slides.
How do these courses compare to a parent teaching the course or taking the course online with a live teacher?
This is a different and unique experience. It is difficult for a parent to teach every child in every subject in a homeschool. It is also sometimes cost-prohibitive to hire a teacher through live Veritas Scholars Academy courses or otherwise. An additional benefit is that the student can do the work whenever he wishes and is not tied down to when a class is scheduled. Some children simply do better in this constantly changing environment.
If Omnibus is a conversation-based course, how can a Self-Paced course achieve the same results?
The Self-Paced courses include “Knowledge Trees” within the program. These are interactions where the Self-Paced course asks the student a question and then, based on his answer, it responds with a counter question or answer. The Self-Paced course is designed to create more questions based off of what information it gets from the student, whether right or wrong. This encourages the student to think and interact with the program.
How is the Omnibus textbook equivalent to the Omnibus Self-Paced lessons?
Each Self-Paced Omnibus lesson is equivalent to one session in the Omnibus textbook. There are several sessions in the textbook for each book that is read in the Omnibus class.
Are report cards available?
Parents can see and print the grades and progress of their students at any time.
