Classical Christian Education, From the Upstate to the Lowcountry
South Carolina families have more school options than they did just a few years ago, and sorting through them can take real time. If you’ve been comparing programs and still aren’t sure which one fits your child, you’re in good company.
Here’s what sets VSA apart. Veritas Press has helped families teach classically for more than 30 years, and Veritas Scholars Academy brings that education into a live online classroom. Students walk through history in order, beginning with Creation, read the great books, learn Latin, and grow in their ability to think, reason, and speak well. Every class is taught from a Christian worldview, by teachers who know their students by name.
Families choose how much VSA to bring home:
- Full-Time Diploma Program. A full course load with VSA, a personal Academic Advisor, and an accredited diploma and transcript at graduation.
- Part-Time live classes. Many South Carolina homeschool families keep teaching most subjects and add a few live courses where a seasoned teacher and real classmates make the biggest difference.
South Carolina’s ESTF Can Help Fund a VSA Education
South Carolina’s Education Scholarship Trust Fund (ESTF) provides $7,634 per student for 2026-27, managed through ClassWallet. Families with household income at or below 500 percent of the federal poverty level, about $160,750 for a family of four, can apply, and families at or below 300 percent get priority.
VSA is priced by the course, so here’s how a typical year compares.
| Typical yearly cost | |
|---|---|
| Typical Full-Time Grammar year | $2,786 |
| Typical Full-Time Secondary year | $5,828 |
| SC ESTF scholarship, 2026-27 | $7,634 |
Tuition only; books are separate.
For a typical full-time student, an ESTF scholarship is more than a year of VSA tuition, with room left for books and curriculum. Every family’s plan is different, so build your own child’s plan to see your real number.

What South Carolina Requires of VSA Families
Every family that leaves a traditional school wonders what the state will expect. South Carolina requires children ages 5 to 17 to attend school, and how you meet that requirement at VSA depends mostly on whether you use ESTF.
Families Using ESTF
Your Scholarship Comes First
Students using ESTF funds can’t also register under one of South Carolina’s homeschool options, and they can’t be enrolled in their local public school while receiving funds.
Your Family Consultant will walk you through the ESTF requirements alongside your child’s VSA course plan.
Families Who Homeschool
Three Legal Options
- Option 1: a home school approved and supervised by your local school district, including state testing (S.C. Code §59-65-40).
- Option 2: membership in the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools (§59-65-45).
- Option 3: membership in a homeschool association with at least 50 members (§59-65-47).
- Each option asks for 180 days of instruction in the core subjects and records of your child’s work. VSA courses can make up some or all of your curriculum.

Wondering how other states treat VSA students? Is My Student Considered a Homeschooler When in the Diploma Program?
A Diploma That Opens Doors
When your child starts thinking about college, the transcript suddenly matters a great deal. Many South Carolina families choose VSA so their high schooler graduates with a record any admissions office will recognize.
An Accredited Diploma
Full-Time Diploma students graduate with a diploma and official transcript from a school accredited by the Middle States Association since 2014. Honors, AP, and dual enrollment courses appear on the transcript with a weighted GPA.
Ready for College
VSA graduates have gone on to schools such as Harvard, Hillsdale, Wheaton, Grove City, and New Saint Andrews, and to the U.S. service academies. Your child’s Academic Advisor helps plan a course of study with their college goals in mind.
College Credit and NCAA
Eligible high school students can earn college credit through our dual enrollment partnership with Cairn University. VSA courses are also NCAA-approved (high school code 392122).
What a Week Looks Like for South Carolina Students
Online school can be hard to picture until you see it. Here’s what a typical week looks like.
Live Classes, Twice a Week
Each live course meets twice a week at a set time, with the same teacher and up to 20 classmates all year. Students raise their hands, answer questions, and discuss ideas together, and friendships grow from there.
Never Behind
Every class is recorded. If a hurricane knocks out the power or a family trip gets in the way, your child watches the recording and stays on track.
Between classes, much of the work happens with books, paper, and pencil. Younger students sing their way through history and chant their Latin vocabulary. Older students read Homer and Augustine, work through formal logic, and learn to write and defend arguments of their own, the classical stages Dorothy Sayers described in “The Lost Tools of Learning” (1947).

Rigorous, and Never Alone
Parents sometimes wonder whether a classical school will be too much for their child. It’s a fair question. VSA is rigorous, and the first months can stretch a student. Teachers, Academic Advisors, and Family Consultants work together to find the right challenge for each child, and every live class comes with real classmates working through the same books. Clubs, field trips, and our End-of-Year Gathering bring students together outside class, too.
My son graduated from Veritas last year. He now attends the United States Air Force Academy. His first year at VSA was difficult, but the skills and tools he learned throughout his time there are paying dividends at the Academy.

Questions South Carolina Families Ask
Is online school free in South Carolina?
South Carolina has tuition-free public virtual options, which follow state standards and teach from a secular perspective. VSA is a private school with tuition. For eligible families, though, the Education Scholarship Trust Fund can cover much or all of a year of VSA tuition. See how ESTF works at VSA.
How much is the South Carolina ESTF scholarship?
For 2026-27, the Education Scholarship Trust Fund provides $7,634 per student. Families with household income at or below 500 percent of the federal poverty level (about $160,750 for a family of four) can apply, and families at or below 300 percent get priority. Enrollment is capped, and the 2026-27 program is full.
Can I use ESTF for VSA?
Yes. Families can pay Veritas Scholars Academy tuition through ClassWallet by submitting a Veritas invoice under “Pay Vendor,” buy Veritas materials in the ClassWallet marketplace, or request reimbursement for qualifying purchases. Using ESTF with Veritas Press.
Do I need to register as a homeschool if my child attends VSA?
It depends on how you pay. Students using ESTF funds can’t also register under one of South Carolina’s homeschool options. Families who aren’t using ESTF can homeschool under Option 1, 2, or 3 and use VSA for some or all of their courses. Your Family Consultant can help you choose.
What are South Carolina’s homeschool options?
Option 1 is supervised by your local school district. Option 2 is membership in the South Carolina Association of Independent Home Schools. Option 3 is membership in a homeschool association with at least 50 members. Each requires 180 days of instruction in the core subjects and records of your child’s work, and Option 1 adds district oversight and state testing.
Is VSA accredited?
Yes. VSA is accredited by the Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), and our accreditation applies to students wherever they live, including South Carolina. How accreditation works at VSA.
What time are classes in South Carolina?
Class times are listed in Eastern Time, the same time zone as South Carolina, so the time you see is the time your child logs on. Courses are usually offered at several times, so families can choose what fits.
Can my child start in the middle of the year?
Yes. VSA welcomes new students throughout the year. Students can join classes in progress, catch up with recorded lessons, and work with their teachers on any makeup work. How switching works.
