The eighth day of Christmas . . .
Today’s January 1st, New Year’s Day and the Eighth Day of Christmas. For centuries, many have also regarded it as the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ. To a modern ear, this sounds strange, even indecorous. We’ve read the account of the occasion in Luke 2:21, but why make a special day of it in the church calendar? Many Christian traditions see great value in its commemoration. Christ’s circumcision reminds us of our Lord’s full humanity. It reminds us, too, that He fulfilled all the demands of the law of Moses. What’s more, Christ’s circumcision may have been the first time He shed blood—a foreshadowing of the Cross to come.
