Dr. Maria Hamilton

Dr. Maria Hamilton is grateful for the opportunity to share her passion for science with Veritas students. Maria began her career with undergraduate studies in Chemistry at the College of William & Mary. As she furthered her training with a Ph.D. in Pharmacology/Cell & Molecular Biology from Duke University, followed by a Postdoctoral Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, her biochemical research focused on the study of post-translational modifications of cellular proteins which play a role in the development of cancer. The wonder of God's creation (especially that which is invisible to the naked eye) has always been and continues to be a topic of her fascination and learning!

While Maria always welcomed the challenge of communicating her research interests to others, she cultivated her delight in teaching during years of home educating her three children in both Oklahoma and Delaware while her family embraced the military lifestyle of her husband’s service in the Air Force. In addition to instructing students classically in math and the sciences, she loves learning and has also enjoyed teaching logic, Latin, and Mock Trial in homeschool groups over the years. Maria’s excitement about teaching has also extended into leading classes of children in both Community Bible Study and Sunday School at her local church. Because she desires to consistently know, live by, and communicate God’s word, she is thrilled at the prospect of encouraging every student to see that when viewed through a biblical lens, all of creation reflects a God of majesty and order.

In her free time, Maria welcomes any opportunity to travel, whether overseas to spend time with extended family in Bolivia or Sweden, or simply to visit her two college age sons who attend the same school in Ohio. Her high school-age daughter continues to keep the home schedule lively with academics, music, theater and all things pink. When not traveling, watching her daughter’s performances, or preparing healthy meals, Maria can be found reading, gardening, jogging, or being walked by the family dog.
