Frequently Asked Questions

SELF-PACED HISTORY AND BIBLE

    • There are 32 events studied in each course, and each event has five lessons in the history courses and four in Bible of approximately 30 to 45 minutes. It is intended that a student will complete one event per week over a school year of 32 weeks.

    • A typical day when doing a Self-Paced Course includes logging onto your VPSA student page, launching the lesson and completing the lesson. There is no homework for the history or Bible courses. An optional collection of historical books is available for the history courses which provide some excellent outside reading.

    • The course is available to the student for twelve months from start date, which is chosen at enrollment. If needed, monthly extensions can be arranged with our office for a fee.

    • After you purchase your self-paced course, you will receive an email with a link to a registration form. On that form, you will indicate the student's information who will be taking the course, as well as your desired start date. The twelve-month access must be started within a year of your purchase date.

    • Children with varying disabilities have had great success with these courses. Feel free to call us at 800-922-5082 to discuss your personal situation.

    • It's important to realize that there is a purpose in highlighting various character traits (even those which aren't always the sort one would want a child to emulate) and, rather than just intending to make the characters more interesting, it serves to note the wide range of people and attitudes we come in contact with in the world. The Bible is replete with characters of all sorts who are intended to be a positive or negative example for us. Not every character we read about in the Bible is meant to be followed perfectly (Recall the stories of some of the greatest heroes in Scripture, like David, Moses, and Samson.) Real-life portrayals of human nature point us to the One who is the perfect example and our perfect sacrifice for sin!

We hope our characters portray a picture of the world that is truthful to the various character traits that exist. Where characters fall short in attitudes or behavior, we write the courses to show them grow in grace as the course and lessons progress, repairing relationships where broken, pointing characters and students alike back to the perfect Word. Like you and I, the characters are not perfect people, and therefore, we believe, they are more relatable. So through presenting aspects of humanity and life as they really are, we hope students learn more about God's world at the same time they are learning more about God's Word.

    • The courses are designed for students in 2nd-6th grades just like the Veritas Press history and Bible programs. We’ve seen 7th and 8th graders benefit too--especially if they have not had our history or Bible program earlier. However, some students, younger and many older (including parents) have been enjoying the courses.

    • Yes. Tests and worksheets are graded, providing parents, teachers, and students with progress reports.

    • Yes, there is no limit. In fact, we highly recommend taking one history course and one Bible course each year.

    • Yes. Successful completion of a course will qualify for the history or Bible requirement for yearly certification.

    • The historical fiction is optional because we recognize that some may not wish to include it in their history study. It should be noted that it adds a great deal for those who do choose to include it. Other resources are not required, because the course is carefully designed to be self-contained, eliminating the need for most outside resources. However, if you love books as we do, you may want to get several anyway—they will only help reinforce the learning.

    • Bible courses were created using HTML5 and can be used on many different devices including PCs, Macs, iPads, and Android tablets. Currently, iPad Minis will not work for this course.

History courses were created using Flash and can only be used on a desktop or a laptop computer.

    • No. They are accessed online only. Due to the interactive nature of the courses and the large file sizes the courses must be accessed online.

    • We do not recommend having mulitple children use the same login. Children each need their own course to keep track of grades and progress. A multi-child discount is available.

    • We believe that the self-paced courses provide the best way to learn the material. Additionally, it is difficult for a parent to teach every child in every subject in a homeschool. Finally, the student can do the work whenever he wishes.

    • Parents can see grades and progress of their students at any time. A report card can be printed upon completion of the course.

    • Internet connection must provide a minimum download speed of 1 Mbps (megabits per second) for History courses and 2 Mbps for Bible courses. If the speed is less than this, self-paced course video will not run smoothly, and interactions will take longer to load. You can check your download speed for free at SpeedTest.net.

SELF-PACED OMNIBUS

    • Omnibus Primary courses have 175 lessons. The courses are planned for a five-day per week schedule and can be completed in 35 weeks. Omnibus Secondary courses have 105 lessons. They are intended for a three-day per week schedule and can be completed in 35 weeks. Lessons will take 45-60 minutes.

    • A typical day when doing a Self-Paced Course includes logging onto your VPSA student page, launching the lesson and watching the course. At the end of the lesson, the homework will be displayed on the second to last screen. All assigned homework will be assumed to be completed for the next lesson.

    • The course is available to the student for twelve months from the start date, which is chosen at enrollment.

    • Yes, there is no limit. In fact, we highly recommend Omnibus Primary and Secondary together.

    • The homework includes the books from the first and second semester book lists. The homework for Omnibus is not optional and the lessons presume knowledge of the books that were assigned to be read.

    • If needed, monthly extensions can be arranged with our office for a fee.

    • While the courses are intended for 7th-12th grades, we understand that parents may need to assess the books being covered in each particular course to determine their student's readiness for some of the content contained therein.

    • Absolutely, and they will be amazed at what they learn.

    • We have great success working with a wide range of issues. Children who have difficulty reading due to visual processing can listen to the books on tape. Other learning disabilities should be discussed with our office. Feel free to call us at 800-922-5082.

    • Yes. Tests will be graded, providing parents, teachers, and students with progress reports.

    • Yes. Successful completion of a course will qualify for the Omnibus Primary or Secondary requirement towards a diploma.

    • Omnibus courses were created using HTML5 and can be completed on many different devices including PCs, Macs, iPads, and Android tablets.

Omnibus courses currently do not work when used with an iPad Mini.

    • No, they are accessed online only. Due to the interactive nature of the courses and the shear size of the files the courses must be accessed online.

    • We don’t recommend it. If a parent wants each child to have recorded quiz and test grades, then a course purchase is necessary for each. If a parent is not concerned about grade reports, they can have multiple children use the same course access. The tests, worksheets and responses are kept for individual students--one per registration. However, a multi-child discount is available.

    • This is a different and unique experience. It is difficult for a parent to teach every child in every subject in a homeschool. It is also sometimes cost-prohibitive to hire a teacher through live Veritas Scholars Academy courses or otherwise. An additional benefit is that the student can do the work whenever he wishes and is not tied down to when a class is scheduled. Some children simply do better in this constantly changing environment.

    • The Self-Paced courses include “Knowledge Trees” within the program. These are interactions where the Self-Paced course asks the student a question and then, based on his answer, it responds with a counter question or answer. The Self-Paced course is designed to create more questions based off of what information it gets from the student, whether right or wrong. This encourages the student to think and interact with the program.

    • Each Self-Paced Omnibus lesson is equivalent to one session in the Omnibus textbook. There are several sessions in the textbook for each book that is read in the Omnibus class.

    • Parents can see grades and progress of their students at any time. A report card can be printed upon completion of the course.

    • Internet connection must provide a minimum download speed of 2 Mbps (megabits per second). If the speed is less than this, self-paced course video will not run smoothly, and interactions will take longer to load. You can check your download speed for free at SpeedTest.net.
